How to Climb a Slab

Slabs are one of my favorite things to climb, though Mt Everest doesn't have a lot of them. I love the balance and the friction. But of course, falling down a sandpaper-esque granite slab is pretty brutal on the skin! Read on to learn more about climbing slabs.

Chalk Up!

Slabs require very focused balance and don't offer a lot to hold onto. That means having dry hands is imperative to getting to the top as you can't go up if you can't hold on!

Remember, It's OK to Fall

To Do:

  • Just let it happen
  • Hop back a bit as you're starting your fall (if possible!)
  • Stay upright
  • Be ready for some abrasions

Don't Do:

  1. Panic
  2. Grab the rope
  3. Flip upside down
  4. Drink a lot of water before starting :)
